Summer Garden Maintenance Ideas

There are plenty of details which go into planning and even sewing a summer time garden. Many people get into building a summer garden without realizing the amount of work that it takes to keep it maintained throughout the summer time months and into the coming fall months as well. If prolonging the life and beauty of your summer garden is a priority then there are things that must be done in order to keep everything ship shape and in good working order.
Make yourself a calendar of the different chores that need to be done in the garden for its maintenance needs and stick to it throughout the season as is allowed by the weather. Make sure this list allows for upsets such as a week of rain or a week of no rain as well as time to adjust for these inconsistencies and an inability to work in the garden when temperatures are well over the mark on the thermometer that reads uncomfortably hot. If you have your jobs listed and written down in an area that is out in the open, then it is a fact that you will be more likely to get them done as you will think about them whenever you see the list and it will begin to weigh on you if you don’t. Better in sight and in mind than out of sight out of mind.
Some of the things that will need to be on this list will be weeding, mulching, watering, and fertilizing all according to the recommended specification of the plants that you have in your garden. Check for leaves that are turning yellow and any pruning that needs to occur on a weekly basis. All of the leaves that are dying need to be taken off as needed and all of the necessary pruning and weeding needs to be followed up on whenever you have a free minute or it becomes imperative for it to be done. Weeds can have a tendency to start taking over, and if this happens placing a larger amount of mulch in the beds could be a partial solution to your problem
Trim the areas of your lawn using a gas string trimmer that need trimming in order to create a more uniform appearance between lawn and garden. You do not want to ignore the beauty of your garden because your lawn is looking shaggy and unkempt. Devote a little time to lawn care in order to keep your lawn and garden on a consistent scale with one another throughout the summer gardening season.
Make sure that you carefully study each plant that you have in your garden and are aware of any special needs that exist for one plant over another. The reason being is that some plants need things that others don’t. Many types of plants require more shade than others and other plants need more water than others. Knowing their specific needs will allow you to provide for them and take proper care of the time and investment of money that you already have in them.
Making sure that your garden is taken care of through the summer is a great way to make sure that any harvesting that is done in the fall will go a lot smoother than otherwise, and it will also give you the fore site to make plans which will help it through the winter. Every year that you garden should be a learning process for the next year. When you plan out your next garden you can plan around any of the problems that you encountered the year before. Always take time to learn from both your successes and your summer gardening failures for the best possible results. After a few seasons of growing, you will know how big of a garden you will feel comfortable with maintaining and whether or not you want to take on a larger or a smaller responsibility.
